Instructional Applications of Technology :Padlet

In the 21st century, teaching and learning have undergone significant transformations due to advancements in technology and changes in pedagogical approaches. The traditional model of education, where teachers were the sole source of knowledge and student passively receive information, is no longer effective in preparing students for the use of the complex, dynamic world they face. Therefore, as an upcoming educator, it is important to integrate technology using a vast range of technological resources to create an interactive platform and enhance students’ learning outcomes. In the ‘Instructional Applications of Technology’ course I was enlightened about a vast variety of technology-enhanced teaching and learning resources which includes but are not limited to; ChatGPT, YouTube, Blogging, WhatsApp, and Padlet. This was my first time encountering the Padlet for interactive teaching and learning interaction.

What is Padlet?

Padlet is a web-based tool that supports the collaboration of sharing information such as class discussions, projects, and much more.1 it allows users to create a digital “wall space” where they can add various types of content such as text, images, videos, links, and documents. The purpose of  Padlet is to provide a virtual space for teachers and students to collaborate, share ideas, and engage in interactive learning experiences. It also promotes active participation and fosters communication between users, facilitating knowledge exchange and enhancing the learning process. A study conducted by M. Modh et al.  “Enhancing Classroom Engagement Through Padlet as a Learning Tool” results shows that Padlet software can enhance student engagement in learning activities, both inside and outside the classroom as the software offers features that enable students to work independently, or collaboratively on various tasks.2 They also stated that by providing students with their own virtual space, Padlet allows them to engage more intensively in their learning process.2

While using Padlet as a teaching and learning resource can be exciting and holds great promise, it is important to understand both advantages and disadvantages of using Pallet in the learning environment. Below is a table of the advantages and disadvantages of integrating Padlet in the learning environment.

Advantages

Disadvantages

·         Enhance collaboration: it allows students and educators to collaborate in real-time, fostering a sense of community and engagement

Technical challenges: while padlet is generally user-friendly, technical glitches, such as slow loading times or compatibility issues, can occur

·         Multimedia integration: Padlet supports various multimedia formats such as images, videos, documents, and links. This feature enables educators to present information in a visually appealing manner, catering to diverse learning styles while enhancing content retention

Limited assessment: Padlet may lack robust assessment features, as educators may find it challenging to evaluate students’ progress and provide meaningful feedback.

·         Organization and accessibility: Padlet provides a user-friendly interface that allows educators to organize and categorize content easily.

Privacy concerns: some students may feel uncomfortable sharing their work or ideas publicly, thus affecting their participation or engagement.

In conclusion, Padlet is a powerful and versatile tool that can enhance teaching and learning in various ways. By incorporating Padlet into their instructional practices, educators can create a dynamic and engaging learning environment that caters to the diverse needs of their students.
